All testing and evaluation is done only with the motive of helping the children learn better and NOT with the idea of passing judgment on them. They are in school to learn and to be helped in learning, and NOT to perform and be judged. Learning is too complex a process to be gauged adequately by marks and grades. Moreover, these end up assuming a disproportionate importance in the minds of children, parents and teachers, perverting the learning endeavour and becoming the end towards which learning is directed. As such we have abandoned the minimalistic and often humiliating practice of grading, ranking or marking in our classrooms. We strive to create a friendly, collaborative learning environment in our classrooms, which enables our children to develop freely at their own pace, even as they move towards optimising their potential without the fear and humiliation of unfair comparisons with their friends. We try to help our children and to ensure that they emerge not only with literacy and numerical skills, but more importantly, as secure individuals, sure of their special worth. We believe that schools should be nurturing places where everyone-teachers, students and parents should feel supported, cared for and respected. We conceive of teaching as an extremely creative and complex process, one requiring much imagination, continuous thinking, caring and commitment. Teachers are all very creative persons, needing the freedom and the opportunity to discover their own hidden depths, which flower and blossom, given a hospitable climate. We try to create an environment which nurtures the creativity and growth of our teachers too, because we believe that only those who are prepared to to learn and grow all their lives can teach effectively. We work towards making our school a "community of learners", based upon a foundation of mutual support, caring and trust-one, in which we are constantly learning from each other. Study Hall was founded in January 1986 with the vision described above. Since then we have to structure our school around the beliefs and values mentioned above. Our pedagogy, teaching methodology, our curriculum, organizational structure, teacher-student relationship, policies and rules are all designed to actualize our vision of schooling and education. The happiness with which our children come to school, the joy with which they learn, the caring and imagination with which our teachers teach them and the appreciative co-operation that we receive from our parent body, is sufficient vindication to our efforts. This tells us that we are on the right path and encourages us to continue in this direction. |
